How to wear the Russian hat
This fur hat, once a huge favourite among the Russian bourgeoisie, is the winter accessory of choice for those of us who are sensitive to the cold. The Russian hat is the warmest head accessory you’ll get your hands on. After being considered old-fashioned for many years, it is now back in favour and melting the hearts of fashionistas.
Choosing your Russian hat. There are a number of versions of the traditional Russian hat. The most common and most revisited is without a doubt its fur version (or faux fur for animal lovers) with ear flaps. This sizeable hat covers your whole head, some of your forehead and your ears. But don’t fret, there are some less magisterial models available than ones seen at Yigal Azrouel! There is an array of colours to choose from as well. They come in chestnut/brown and black as well as in white and more colourful versions. It all depends on your style. You can also find fleece versions. Though less stylish, these will keep you just as warm as any other Russian hat. Finally, you could also try its ear flap-free cousin, called a toque.
How to wear the Russian hat. Team your Russian hat with a long fur coat for the perfect snow queen effect. If you’re not in touch with your high society side, wear it with a padded coat or leather jacket and combine with biker boots, slim jeans or a leather mini skirt for a neo-rock look.
Hairstyles to go with your Russian hat. The Russian hat is worn pulled right onto the head. If you have short or bobbed hair, it’s a pretty safe bet that your hair will be completely hidden under the hat. If you have mid-length or long hair, make the most of it by leaving it down or wearing it in a low up-do. Ultra-sleek, straight hair or wavy hair is perfect for this type of hat. If you’d rather wear your hair up, go for side braids, low ponytails and chignons. Finally, if you find that your roots tend to go greasy under your Russian hat, use a shampoo for greasy roots and dry ends to overcome this temporary crisis!
